Pena Hughes-John

Steampunk Gothette and the Ukulele

Hello and thank you for visiting my page. My name is Alutepena Hughes-John ('Pena' for short).

I am a singer/songwriter who is normally accompanied by my Ukulele at Festivals, gigs and Open Mics in and around the Surrey area (and beyond). Nicknamed : 'the lady with the Uke', I have performed at various venues and Festivals including Carshalton Environmental Festival, Cambridge Strawberry Fair, Surrey Steampunk Convivial as well as the Eastbourne Steampunk Festival.  My solo work has been described as melodic indie folk.

Lethia's Natorium

'Lethia's Natorium' is not a band but in fact is the title of my music project where the music genre is a slightly heavier version of my solo work with the genre classified as 'Progressive Symphonic Goth Punk Rock with a slice of reggae for good measure'.

Launched in January 2022, 'Lethia's Natorium' consists of two sets of session musicians.

The first set are musicians that I collaborate with remotely (in the UK as well as overseas) and studio Producers/musicians face to face - collectively referred to as 'the sound' of Lethia's Natorium.

The second set of musicians are the ones that accompany me at gigs and Festivals, known as 'the Lethia's Natorium band'.   So far, 'the band' performed at the Bedford River Festival as well as Cobbles & Cogs in September.

Although many of my musician and non-musician friends advised me on many occasions, that putting a band together would be much easier (and cheaper), I have found, almost one year on, that working this way proved beneficial in terms of the project.  It gives me the freedom to bring musicians in or not dependent on the song, which you cannot really do whilst in a band.  My main mantra for this project is 'quality' in each song produced.  To produce each song to the best of my ability and to do each song justice.  That was my mission then and that continues to be my mission now and on into the future.  Having been in bands in the past, I most definitely do not miss the hierarchy, commitment differences and the inner politics that exists in many bands.

With the debut album 'Tenant' already released, work has already begun on the 'follow-up' album, with November marking the beginning of my sessions at the recording studio.  The follow-up album for 'Lethia's Natorium' (project) is scheduled for release in Autumn 2023.

Influenced by the likes of Tori Amos, Skunk Anansie, Kate Bush and Bjork, UK singer-songwriter Pena Hughes-John has a steampunk sound with a unique edge.
